Sound for motion pictures is an aural experience designed and produced to support the story of a narrative or documentary. Sound could tell a story directly, or it could be used to enhance a story. Although there are separate perceptual mechanism for sound and picture, the sound may be integrated by the audience along with the picture into a complete whole. In such a situation, the sound and the picture together could become greater than sum of these two components. In most cases, motion picture sound is constructed in post production utilizing many piece of sound mixed seamlessly together to create a complete whole. The sources for the sound include recording made during principal photography on the sets or location; song, background music, effects sound recorded specially for the motion picture. Sound is variously used to enhance the effect of visuals on the mind of the viewers. Technical and artistic aspects of recording sound are to be kept in mind while recording sound. However, what is most important for motion picture sound is what the viewers listen. The syllabus for this course of study covers both the art and technique of sound for motion picture PTU
